I came across Oe during my third year in high school. I was trolling through the library for books by Asian/Asian American writers.
Of the works I have read, I most enjoyed A Quiet Life. Written from the perspective of his daughter, A Quiet Life follows her relationship with her oldest brother Hikari, aka Eeyore. Eeyore is the prominent character in most of Oe’s works; despite his severe physical and mental handicaps, Oe focuses on what he is able to pull away from his son often transforming fictional-Eeyore into a type of wise fool.
